Deck Strengths
  • Can easily deal with all of Marik's threats
  • Fast, Sphynx's milling can end the duel by about turn 17.
  • Consistent, there are many redundant ways to seach and summon Sphynx.
Deck Weaknesses
  • Does not get the 1000 point bonus for effect damage only
  • If Beast Rising is drawn late, it can be difficult to get 10K ATK in time.
Deck Summary

Marik's deck is extremely punishing, with multiple ways to clear monsters on your field, as well as inflict burn damage. Fortunately, his removal requires multiple monsters on your side of the field, and his burn targets, which is the perfect recipe to be farmed with Hazy Flame. They cannot be targeted for card effects and Beast Rising clears your field to avoid Lava Golem, so once you establish a Hazy monster with enough ATK (3400), Marik cannot defeat it.

General Strategy:

  • Summon Hazy Flame Sphynx (or at least a 2000 ATK Cerberus) ASAP.
  • Activate Beast Rising.
  • Use Sphynx's effect to special summon Beast-Warrior monsters and use Beast Rising to boost Sphynx (when using Sphynx, make sure to avoid milling Fairy Meteor Crush)
  • Final Turn: equip Sphynx with Meteor Crush and attack a monster for 10K damage.

Be careful to turn toggle to ON and use Beast Rising to make sure you only have one monster on the field on Marik's turn. This is to avoid Lava Golem.

Core Cards
Card Explanation
Hazy Flame Sphynx

The core card, special summoning fire monsters and being untargetable make Sphynx an ideal boss monster. With Beast Rising to patch up her low 1900 ATK, you can continually special summon monsters to fuel Beast Rising and put Sphynx above 3.4K ATK, which is the win condition.

Mandatory 3.

Hazy Flame Cerbereus

He searches Sphynx, and has a decent 2000 ATK. If you're going to banish him for Beast Rising, make sure he's special summoned or tribute summoned.

Run 3.

Mausoleum of the Emperor

The field spell helps you summon Hazy monsters and reduce your life points. Be careful about going too low, Bowganian can finish you off.

Run 3.

Fairy Meteor Crush

This card is simply the easiest way to inflict 10K damage with Sphynx. It can be replaced by any other card that allows a monster to attack directly or deal piercing damage.

Run 1 or an equivalent card

Beast Rising

The second most important card in the deck, Beast Rising is both an ATK booster and a way to avoid Lava Golem. It is essential in order to get the 10K Damage assessment points, so the goal is to get it on the field ASAP and power up Sphynx.

Run 3.

Mirrorer serves two purposes in this deck: tribute fodder for the Hazy monsters, and a Beast-Warrior that can be banished for Beast Rising. It isn't strictly necessary, but having the extra body is very helpful to stall or tribute summon.

Run 2-3.
